Just In: University of Uyo Secures British Council Funded Grant

The University of Uyo has received a grant from the British Council for a project focused on Technical and Vocational Education and Training. The project, which will last for one year, seeks to improve sustainability and economic development in Nigeria by leveraging digital technologies in TVET. Professor Emmanuel Akpabio, a Geography and Human Resources Management professor at the University of Uyo, announced this during a press conference. He noted that the project is a collaboration with Edinburgh Napier University, led by Dubem Ikediashi.

Akpabio explained that the construction industry is shifting towards using advanced digital tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and sustainability practices. Because of this, professionals need skills that go beyond traditional methods. The TVET program aims to give individuals practical skills, boost employability, and contribute to Nigeria's economic growth by supplying a skilled workforce. It will also encourage innovation and technological progress.

Key project activities include a "train the trainers" workshop for technical institutions and industry practitioners, and exchange visits to Edinburgh Napier University and UK construction industry partners. The Uyo workshop is set for October 14-17, 2025. Akpabio stressed the project's importance in strengthening ties between academia and industry, improving construction education, and ensuring students get hands-on training for real-world challenges.

Akpabio invited the public, industry stakeholders, academia, and media to follow the project and participate. He called it a milestone for the University of Uyo, showing its growing reputation and research capabilities. He thanked the Vice Chancellor, Nyaudo Ndaeyo, for leadership support, and the British Council for funding the project.
